Shane Warne dropped by the Rajasthan Royals’ Academy in Surrey last week for a spin bowling master-class for local children on behalf of the British Asian Trust. This served as a part of Warnie’s contribution to the continued effort by BAT and the Rajasthan Royals to combat child trafficking in India.
A handful of cricket obsessed children from the Southall area had the chance to bat and bowl against man himself at the Royals’ UK indoor cricket hub. True to his reputation, the legend did not disappoint.
Warnie took some time to talk through some of his tips and tricks from back in the day. He gave perspectives of not only how to get the most out of your bowling as spinner, but also helped the batsmen in the room gain some oversight in terms of what to watch out for beyond the bowlers’ poker face.
After this introduction and advice came the kids’ chance to have a go at facing Warnie, and to test whether they can pick his wrong’un. This was before Shane donned the pads to face some impressive bowling from the group youngsters.
After this first session the Shane opened a Q&A to the floor with the RR Academy. He shared his top tips on spin bowling and shed some light on what it takes to perform at the top level of professional sport. The group was captivated and with everyone there jumped at the opportunity to catch a pearl of wisdom from the all-time great. It was a day they will not soon forget.
In the evening, Warnie attended a dinner with 3 lucky winners from the Rajasthan Royals UK twitter competition #WarniesRoyalDinner for an evening of great food and even better anecdotes from Warnie’s glory days. Conversation flowed as our three lucky winners Ewan, Stevie and Harsh chatted to Warnie about his greatest moments in the IPL and Ashes past, with a few off the field stories chucked in for good measure.
Another fantastic day for the RR family and another step for BAT and the Rajasthan Royals on the long road to ending child trafficking in India. Bowling Shane!
