18 year old Mahipal Lomror, bought for 20 lakhs by the Royals in the 2018 IPL Auction, won’t have far to travel to get to home games, he was born and brought up in Rajasthan! He is bound to be a firm favourite of Royals fans – there is nothing like home grown talent to make supporters feel particularly proud of their achievements. The talented teenager started as a specialist batsman and later turned into an all-rounder, because he can bowl very tight left-arm spin, a skill that is particularly useful against batsmen trying to force the pace in limited overs cricket.

Lomror is an aggressive batsman himself. He fearlessly goes for big shots, rather like his batting role model Adam Gilchrist back in the day. Mahipal represented Rajasthan in the Under-16 and Under-19 levels. Noticing his natural talent, the national selectors picked him for the Under-19 World Cup in 2016. Mahipal impressed in only his second match, against New Zealand, with a quick 45 in the lower order. When given the opportunity to bowl he didn’t disappoint either – securing five wickets. A few months later he was picked for the India Under-19s in the run-up to the World Cup and he did well again. In a tri-series in Sri Lanka, the youngster claimed 4 for 10 in five overs against England. Mahipal may be a Gilchrist fan when it comes to batting, but as far as bowling is concerned, his role model is Royals old boy Ravindra Jadeja. “Gilchrist is a big match player. You can see his record. Whenever there was a big occasion, he would perform. In bowling, I like Jadeja’s accuracy.” All that is maybe, but to some pundits Lomror is more reminiscent of a junior Chris Gayle. Let’s hope he goes on to emulate at least one of his heroes in Royals kit – if he does, then the locals in his home town will be truly cockahoop!
