Yudhvir Singh delivered a memorable all-round performance to guide Jammu and Kashmir to a stunning win over 42-time champions Mumbai in their Ranji Trophy 2024-25 Group A clash on Saturday.
The 27-year-old all-rounder, who will represent Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2025, was named Player of the Match for his exploits with both bat and ball.
Yudhvir picked up 4/31 in the first innings and 3/64 in the second to break the back of the Mumbai cricket team’s batting line-up. His 20 in the first innings was crucial in helping J&K take an 86-run lead.
Defending champions Mumbai, playing at home at the Sharad Pawar Cricket Academy, elected to bat first but were immediately rocked by Jammu and Kashmir’s bowlers.
Auqib Nabi and Umar Nazir Mir dismantled the star-studded Mumbai top order featuring Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rohit Sharma, and Ajinkya Rahane, reducing them to 41/4.
Yudhvir then took charge, removing Shreyas Iyer and Shams Mulani before returning to dismiss a well-set Shardul Thakur and Mohit Avasthi, finishing with figures of 4/31 as Mumbai folded for a paltry 120. Umar Nazir Mir ended with 4/41.
In response, Jammu and Kashmir found themselves at 164/7 but Yudhvir’s gritty 20, including a vital 26-run partnership with skipper PK Dogra, helped push the visitors to 206, earning a crucial 86-run lead.
Mumbai’s second innings began with promise as openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal added 54 runs for the first wicket. However, Yudhvir once again turned the tide, dismissing both openers in quick succession.
Though Mumbai’s middle order collapsed to 101/7, Shardul Thakur (119) and Tanush Kotian (62) staged a valiant fightback with a record 174-run partnership for the eighth wicket.
After Shardul Thakur was dismissed, Yudhvir cleaned up Tanush Kotian to end Mumbai’s resistance.
Yudhvir Singh ended with match figures of 7/95 in 23.2 overs.
Chasing 207, Jammu and Kashmir produced a collective batting effort to seal a memorable victory, marking one of the biggest upsets of the season.
