Rovman Powell will continue as the captain of the West Indies T20I cricket team during their 2024 white-ball tour of Sri Lanka starting October 13. Meanwhile, Shimron Hetmyer has opted out of the 15-member squad citing personal reasons.
The West Indies cricket team will play three T20Is and three ODIs in Sri Lanka. The tour will start with a T20I at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla on October 13. The second and the third T20Is are scheduled for October 15 and 17 at the same venue.
Powell, who plays for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League, had led the West Indies to the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024. The middle-order batter is an experienced campaigner in the shortest format with 80 T20Is to his name.
The 31-year-old Powell has scored 1456 runs, including a century and six fifties, for the West Indies at an average of 25.10 and an impressive strike rate of 143.58. He has picked up five wickets and has also taken 39 catches in the format.
Powell has been a regular in the T20 circuit all over the globe with a total of 248 T20s to his credit. He has amassed 4340 runs at an average of 24.11 and a strike rate of 138.70.
The Jamaican had also led Barbados Royals to the knockouts of the Caribbean Premier League 2024 before falling short to Guyana Amazon Warriors in the second Qualifier. Powell accumulated 158 runs from 10 innings in the competition at an average of 22.57.
