Teen sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi continued to make headlines, smashing his maiden half-century in senior domestic cricket with a scintillating 71 off just 42 balls for Bihar against Baroda in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 on Tuesday.
The knock made Vaibhav Suryavanshi the youngest Indian batter to score a fifty in List-A cricket. This comes a fortnight after he became the youngest Indian to debut in List-A cricket at 13 years and 269 days against Madhya Pradesh in Bihar’s tournament opener.
Playing at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, Vaibhav gave Bihar a flying start in their chase of 278. The 13-year-old opener propelled Bihar to 40/0 in five overs.
Despite losing his opening partner Rajnish Kumar in the sixth over, Vaibhav’s fearless stroke play kept Bihar’s momentum alive. The youngster brought up his half-century in style but fell in the 13th over with the score at 100. Vaibhav’s knock was laced with eight boundaries and four sixes.
Bihar, needing 178 runs from 223 balls after Vaibhav’s dismissal, faltered in the middle overs, losing regular wickets. The team managed to score 241/9 in their 50 overs, falling short by 36 runs.
Last month, Vaibhav became the youngest player to earn an IPL contract when Rajasthan Royals snapped him up in the IPL 2025 auction.
Earlier this year, he entered the record books for being the youngest Indian to feature in first-class cricket when he took the field in the Ranji Trophy for Bihar against Mumbai.
The southpaw’s exploits extend to the international stage as well. Representing India at the Under-19 level, he holds the record for the fastest youth Test century by an Indian - a blistering 58-ball ton against Australia in September at the Chepauk. Vaibhav was also instrumental in India’s run to the ACC U19 Asia Cup final earlier this month, smashing two half-centuries.
