Sandeep Sharma picked up a four-wicket haul against Assam but his efforts fell short as the Chandigarh cricket team lost to Assam by 11 runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.

Batting first at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, the Assam cricket team was shot out for 150 after coasting at 141/4 at one stage with Jagjit Singh and Sandeep Sharma triggering the collapse.

Sandeep Sharma accounted for three of the last five wickets, dismissing Akash Sengupta, Jitumoni Kalita and Mukhtar Hussain to end with figures of 4/22 in his quota of four overs. He had sent back captain Denish Das for a first-ball duck earlier in the match.

Saahil Jain top-scored for Assam with 51 (35b, 1x4, 4x6). In response, Chandigarh were all out for 139, led by Raj Bawa’s 37 (33b, 2x4, 1x6). Mukhtar Hussain, Mrinmoy Dutta, Avinov Choudhury and Nipan Deka took two wickets each for Assam.

So far, Sandeep Sharma has picked up eight wickets in three matches in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 and is joint-second highest wicket-taker in the tournament behind Jammu and Kashmir’s Abid Mushtaq, who has nine in three games.

Sandeep’s eight wickets have come at 10.50 apiece and a stingy economy of seven runs per over.

Chandigarh are second in the Group D points table after three matches behind Assam in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the premier domestic T20 tournament in India.

The top team from each of the five groups, along with the best-performing second-placed team, will advance directly to the quarter-finals. The other four second-placed teams will play in two preliminary quarter-finals with the winners proceeding further to round off the last-eight stage.

The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 final will be held on December 15.
