Yashasvi Jaiswal’s blistering knock gave the Indian cricket team an excellent start over Bangladesh on day four of the second Test at Green Park in Kanpur on Monday.

Jaiswal, who plays for the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League, smashed 72 off 51 balls to power the hosts to the fastest team fifty and hundred in Test cricket. He smashed 12 fours and two sixes in his knock which also saw him score the third-fastest fifty by an Indian batter in Test cricket after Rishabh Pant and Kapil Dev.

During his knock, Jaiswal also went past Ajinkya Rahane’s tally of 1159 runs in the World Test Championship 2019-21 cycle to become the highest Indian scorer in a single edition of the WTC. Jaiswal has amassed 1166 runs at an average of 64.77 in the WTC 2023-25 cycle.

The 22-year-old Jaiswal, along with skipper Rohit Sharma, got off to a flier after India restricted Bangladesh to 233 in the post-lunch session. The southpaw hit three boundaries in the first over to set the ball rolling.

Rohit Sharma also attacked from the other end as India looked set to make up for lost time after day two and three of the India vs Bangladesh Test were washed out. The opening duo smashed 22 runs in the third over to power India past the 50-run mark, the fastest in the history of Test cricket.

After Rohit’s dismissal, Jaiswal continued his blitzkrieg carting two boundaries each in the sixth and seventh over en route to his half-century, in just 31 balls. Jaiswal and Shubman Gill took India past 100 in only the 11th over, another record which the team broke on the day.

India broke their own record of the fastest hundred by a team in Tests, which they had set against West Indies in 2023. Interestingly, Jaiswal was part of the Indian side in that match scoring 38 off 30 balls.

Jaiswal got out for a well-made 72 in the 15th over with the score reading 127 and India also became the fastest team to reach 150 in Tests after his dismissal.
