Rajasthan Royals’ Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel and Ravichandran Ashwin have made the cut in the 16-member squad for the first Test against Bangladesh, scheduled to start later this month.

The India vs Bangladesh 2024 Test series will begin with the first Test in Chennai on September 19. The second match is slated to start on September 27 in Kanpur.

The Test series will mark the commencement of the Indian cricket team’s international home season for 2024-25.

India will also play three T20Is against Bangladesh, for which the team will be selected later, the Board of Control for Cricket in India said in a statement on Sunday.

Jaiswal had an outstanding outing in India’s last Test series against England earlier this year. He scored 712 runs in the five matches at an average of 89 and a strike rate of 79.91. He scored two double hundreds, became the youngest Indian to reach 1000 Test runs and was named Player of the Series.

His fledgling career boasts of three centuries and four fifties in just nine matches, and a highest score of 214 not out. His average is an exceptional 68.53.

Ravichandran Ashwin, meanwhile, is the No. 1 Test bowler in the world. Now a veteran of 100 Tests, he reclaimed the top spot after the series against England. With 26 scalps, the 37-year-old was the top wicket-taker in the five-match series.

Dhruv Jurel, who made his Test debut in the same series against England, didn’t find much success with the bat in India A’s Duleep Trophy 2024-25 opener against India B recently but his fine glovework meant that he matched MS Dhoni’s long-standing record for most catches in an innings by a wicket-keeper.

The 23-year-old Dhruv Jurel took seven catches in the second innings on Sunday, equalling Dhoni’s 20-year-old record.

However, besides Jurel, Rishabh Pant has also been named in the squad as a wicketkeeper, marking his return to the squad for the first time since his accident in December 2022. The squad also includes Virat Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma.

Bangladesh are coming into the series after a historic 2-0 Test series victory in Pakistan.
