Wanindu Hasaranga has earned a nomination for the ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of The Year 2024 award, the International Cricket Council has announced.

The ICC Awards are held annually to celebrate the standout performances in each of the three formats from both men’s and women’s cricket.

The leg spinner, signed by the Rajasthan Royals for IPL 2025, was the standout performer this year for the Sri Lanka cricket team with the ball.

Wanindu Hasaranga is the highest wicket-taker in ODI cricket in 2024, picking up 26 scalps at an average of 15.61.

His career-best figures of 7/19 came against Zimbabwe in Colombo in January. Zimbabwe were 43/0 at one point and were bowled out for 96 in 23 overs.

It’s the second-best bowling figures by a Sri Lankan in ODI cricket behind Chaminda Vaas’ 8/19 against Zimbabwe in 2001. Hasaranga’s figures are also the fifth-best in the all-time list.

The 27-year-old cricketer featured in 10 ODI matches for Sri Lanka this year, taking a wicket inside every three overs. He also picked up a 4/27 against Afghanistan in February and a 3/58 against India in August.

Hasaranga, who started his ODI career with a hat-trick in 2017, is also the current world No. 3 in the ICC Men’s T20I Bowling Rankings and fifth in the T20I all-rounders’ list. He is Sri Lanka's all-time leading T20I wicket-taker with 129 scalps and sixth on the all-time list.

He was the leading wicket-taker in the 2021 T20 World Cup with 16 dismissals and captained the side in the 2024 edition.

In IPL cricket, Hasaranga has claimed 35 wickets in 26 matches, including a fifer (5/18) against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2022.

Hasaranga’s compatriot Kusal Mendis, Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai and West Indian power-hitter Sherfane Rutherford are also nominated for the ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of The Year award.
