Yashasvi Jaiswal was named in the 15-member Indian cricket team for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and the preceding ODI series vs England starting in February.
India will host England for a three-match ODI series, with matches scheduled on February 6, 9 and 12. The Champions Trophy, meanwhile, is scheduled from February 19 to March 9.
The 23-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal is already a full-fledged India international, having played 19 Test matches and 23 T20Is but this is his maiden call-up for the ODI format.
“We picked Jaiswal on the basis of what he has shown in the last few months despite not playing ODI cricket," India captain Rohit Sharma explained. "He has been picked on potential and sometimes you have to do that."
An integral part of the Rajasthan Royals setup in the IPL, Jaiswal was India’s leading run-scorer in the recently-concluded Border Gavaskar Trophy Australia vs India Test series. He scored 391 runs in five matches at an average of 43.44.
Jaiswal was also in fantastic form with the bat in 2024 as he scored 1478 runs at an average of 54.74 and a strike rate of almost 70 In Tests.
Only England’s Joe Root scored more than Jaiswal in international red ball cricket last year, having accumulated 1556 runs through the calendar year.
Jaiswal also smashed 36 sixes in Test cricket in 2024 - a new world record for the most maximums in the format in a calendar year. The southpaw was named in Cricket Australia’s best Test team of 2024 as well.
Having made his international debut back in 2023, Jaiswal has scored 1798 runs in 19 Test matches at an average of 52.88. His T20I tally reads 723 runs in 23 games at a strike rate of 164.31.
The ICC Champions Trophy is making a return after an eight-year gap. Reigning champions Pakistan are the primary hosts while India will be playing their matches in Dubai.
The eighth edition of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy features eight ODI teams, which have been divided into two groups of four teams each.
India are in Group A along with Pakistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand. The Men in Blue will start their Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh on February 20 before playing rivals Pakistan in a high-octane showdown on February 23.
Their last group match in the Champions Trophy 2025 will be against New Zealand on March 2.
