Yashasvi Jaiswal became the third Indian player to score a century in his first Test in Australia during the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at the Perth Stadium on Sunday.

The 22-year-old Jaiswal, who was retained by the Rajasthan Royals ahead of the Indian Premier League 2025 season, joined the elite list of ML Jaisimha (1968) and Sunil Gavaskar (1977) to score a century in the first Test Down Under.

Jaiswal (161) scored his fourth Test century, his third this year, to power the Indian cricket team past the 300-run mark in the second innings on the third day with the overall lead going past 400.

He hit 15 fours and three sixes during his gritty knock and became only the second player after Graeme Smith to convert his first four hundreds to scores in excess of 150.

After starting the third day with his overnight score of 90, Jaiswal first played an upper cut over the slip cordon for a boundary before reaching his century in style with a ramp shot off Josh Hazlewood, three overs later.

In the process, he also became the second-youngest Indian opener to score a century on Australian soil after KL Rahul in Sydney in January 2015.

The left-handed opener added 201 runs with Rahul (77), the highest opening wicket partnership, and second overall, at the Perth Stadium. It was also the highest opening wicket stand by an Indian opening pair in Australia, surpassing Sunil Gavaskar and Krishnamachari Srikkanth’s 191-run stand in Sydney in 1986.

Jaiswal made his intentions clear after reaching the three-figure mark with boundaries coming in more frequently off his bat. He raced from 100 to 150 in just 70 balls with his long vigil at the crease coming to an end after 297 deliveries.

His marathon knock ended with India’s score reading 313/3 with the total lead stretching to 359 at the time.
